Technical training: Uruguay's experience in Jalisco

Within the framework of the presentation of the primary results of the project "Bases for an integrated management of road safety", where the conclusions of the qualitative and quantitative studies carried out were presented, as well as presentations to different stakeholders of the Technical Standard for School Environments by the State of Jalisco; a series of technical training sessions on child road safety were also given to different government stakeholders by the Fundación Gonzalo Rodríguez.

"Bases for an integrated management of road safety" is the project approved by the Uruguay-Mexico Joint Cooperation Fund in its V call for proposals. The project, which started last September 26, 2022, is managed for two years by the Fundación Gonzalo Rodríguez; the National Road Safety Unit (UNASEV) of Uruguay; and the Secretary of Transportation of the State of Jalisco, Mexico; and works on the implementation of evidence-based policies for child road safety; and on relevant contributions on innovative practices for road safety management.

The project is carried out within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda and the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021 - 2030, according to the United Nations General Assembly resolution, with the goal of reducing road traffic deaths and injuries by 50% in that period of time.

These trainings are presented as a real opportunity to contribute with the State of Jalisco, Mexico, in the advancement of the development of evidence-based public policies and, above all, to share the example of Uruguay to learn from its successes and mistakes. School transportation, children as occupants of private vehicles, and children as pedestrians were some of the topics presented that seek, among other objectives, to leave the technical knowledge in place, so that Mexico can advance in the safe mobility of children.

In December 2023 a delegation from Mexico will visit Uruguay to fulfill the counterpart of the project and share the good practices that from the State of Jalisco are key to advance towards a state policy where safe mobility is the center.
