18 years of Gonchi's Legacy

Gonzalo "Gonchi" Rodríguez continues to be remembered as what he was: a simple being, full of faith and optimism, proud and respectful of his origins, who knew how to bring the Uruguayan flag to the top of the world podiums. On September 11, 1999, Gonzalo "Gonchi" Rodríguez died in a crash during the qualifying sessions of the CART series at Laguna Seca circuit.

Among the various activities that will be held to honor the Uruguayan driver, his car, the Lola – Zytek, heritage of all Uruguayans, will be exhibited in the hall of Tower 4 of the World Trade Center on September 11 and 12. On this car Gonchi raced the F3000 (currently GP2) and won the Monaco GP. Access is open to the public.

Like every year, the Uruguayan Drivers Association (AUVO), paid tribute to our national motor hero at the Víctor Borrat Fabini (VBF) racetrack in El Pinar, last 9th and 10th September with the "Gonzalo 'Gonchi' Rodríguez" Cup at the 6th round of the championship.

The Uruguayan Karting Federation, the Uruguayan Rally Club (CUR) and the Uruguayan Autocross Drivers Club (CUPA) also joined the honors, naming their September rounds "Gonzalo Rodríguez". The Uruguayan Karting Federation round will take place on 23rd and 24th this month at the Pinar racetrack, while the CUR round will be held from September 29 to October 1 in Melo, Cerro Largo, and the CUPA will do it on Sunday, October 1 in Aguas Corrientes.

The Fundación Gonzalo Rodríguez aims, through these tributes, to keep Gonchi, his values, and his eternal smile alive in the memory of all Uruguayans.
